The Person Behind the Words

Hi, I'm Maya.

I'm a design writer, creative director, and the founder of Inkwell. For the past five years, I've been publishing essays about the intersection of craft, culture, and clarity, the quiet things that shape how we work, create, and see the world.

Before Inkwell, I spent a decade leading design teams at studios in San Francisco and Berlin. I've helped build brands for Fortune 500 companies and small-batch coffee shops and I've learned more from the latter.

I believe that good writing and good design solve the same problem: they make the complex feel inevitable. That's what I'm always chasing here.

What Drives This Work

Things I Believe In

Not a manifesto. Just a few principles that show up in everything I write.

🎯

Clarity Over Cleverness

A sentence that lands cleanly does more work than a paragraph that dazzles. I rewrite until the complexity disappears and only the idea remains.

🔍

Specificity as Respect

Vague writing is a form of condescension. When you are specific, you trust the reader to handle the full weight of your thinking.

🐢

Slow, Then Fast

The best work is done slowly, then shared quickly. Take the time you need in the making. Don't take it from the reader in the reading.

🌿

Earned Optimism

Not naive positivity, but a deliberate orientation toward what's possible. Cynicism requires no skill. Hope takes real work.

📚

Depth Before Breadth

One idea explored fully is worth more than ten ideas mentioned casually. Inkwell publishes less so that each piece can be more.

🤝

Openness

I try to be wrong loudly and right quietly. If an essay changes what you think, I want to hear about it. Genuine conversation is the point.
